The Mass Distribution of Extrasolar Planet-candidates and Spectroscopic-binary Low-mass Companions
نویسندگان
چکیده
Spectroscopic orbits have been reported for nine unseen companions orbiting solartype stars with minimum possible masses in the range 0.5 to 10 Jupiter masses. We compare the mass distribution of these nine planet candidates with the distribution of low-mass secondaries in spectroscopic binaries. Although we still have only a very small number of systems, the two distributions suggest two distinctive populations. The transition region between the two populations might be at the range of 10–30 Jupiter

The Mass Distribution of Extra-solar Giant Planets and Spectroscopic-binary Low-mass Companions
Spectroscopic orbits have been reported for nine unseen companions orbiting solar-type stars with minimum possible masses in the range 0.5 to 10 Jupiter masses. We compare the mass distribution of these nine planet candidates with the distribution of low-mass secondaries in spectroscopic binaries and nd that they present two distinctive distributions. The borderline between the two populations ...
متن کاملTen Low-mass Companions from the Keck Precision Velocity Survey
Ten new companions have emerged from the Keck precision Doppler velocity survey, with minimum (M sin i) masses ranging from 0.8 MJUP to 0.34 M . Five of these are planet candidates with M sin i < 12 MJUP, two are brown dwarf candidates with M sin i 30 MJUP, and three are low-mass stellar companions. Hipparcos astrometry reveals the orbital inclinations and masses for three of the (more massive)...
متن کاملThe Search for Extrasolar Planets from Space at Optical and Ultraviolet Wavelengths
I summarize the status of ground-based radial-velocity searches for extrasolar planets, and I speculate about the new results that we can expect from such searches over the next few years. Then I summarize the plans for space-based astrometric searches for extrasolar planets, and I compare the capabilities of the Hipparcos, DIVA, FAME, GAIA, and SIM missions for detecting low-mass companions in...
متن کاملComparison between Extrasolar Planets and Low-mass Secondaries
This paper compares the statistical features of the sample of discovered extrasolar planets with those of the secondaries in nearby spectroscopic binaries, in order to enable us to distinguish between the two populations. Based on 32 planet candidates discovered until March 2000, we find that their eccentricity and period distribution are surprisingly similar to those of the binary population, ...
متن کاملAn Upper Bound on the Flux Ratio of ρ CrB ’ s Companion at 1 . 6 μ
We use high resolution infrared spectroscopy to investigate the 2001 report by Gatewood and colleagues that ρ CrB's candidate extrasolar planet companion is really a low-mass star with mass 0.14 ± 0.05 M ⊙. We do not detect evidence of such a companion; the upper bounds on the (companion/primary) flux ratio at 1.6 µm are less than 0.0024 and 0.005 at the 90 and 99% confidence levels, respective...
